Friday Night in Ashevegas

Tonight I took son #1 and son #3 out for some fun. After dinner we sat outside of the HOP
We listened to live music, saw a lifesize icecream cone, and the boys got balloon creatures and had their faces painted by a very talented artist. I spent my time knitting the caliometry.

What are you thankful for today?

Son #2 had his heart exam in Atlanta this afternoon. He has to go once every 18 months. I never know if this will be the year he has to have a heart transplant or not. He has already had three open heart surgeries, five days old was his first one, followed by six months and eighteen months old. He will turn ten in September! I am profoundly, tearfully thankful today for these ten years.

Knit Night

Last night I wrestled my social anxiety to a manageable whimper and met my Ravelry friend Lizabee for dinner and knit night at Purls. Liz's house is very cool, hardwood floors and lots of artwork plus she sews her own clothes which I dont think she realizes how talented she is. I mean, I WANT a pair of those flowered pants. Her hubby made a lovely dinner of stuffed green peppers with couscous, which I pretended to eat while being entertained by their adorably precocious son Art. (His real name is Koala but Art is his street name). So we walked to Purl's and had a nice chatty yarny time. Another friend drove us back, and walking towards the car I was wishing I had a camera with me because the night in Asheville was so pretty on Wall Street. Then I remembered I DID have my camera. Duh.

Seeking Club footed person in need of socks

Cackled my way through the second toe.

Picnic and Squidward

This weekend we attended the church picnic. I really liked the park they had it at. There was a pool, plus the boys got to see if they will be the next King of England.

Also, I'm happy to report that Son #1 is adjusting extremely well to sixth grade. He is starting band and has made a friend. See Squidward at top of post....

Recycled Hand-Dyed OMG

i really REALLY can't quite believe how pretty this turned out. I started with a fugly black and white thrift store sweater. tag on sweater: 85% wool 10% acryclic 5% angora. After I removed the black thread and unraveled it with help from son #3 and Hubby, I finally got up the courage to dye it myself. I had read that cheap fake kool aid makes fun bright colors. I got this stuff at Dollar General. I used two packets at a time, mixed in warm water, dipped half the yarn, put stovetop on six. Fifteen minutes later I did the other half. Then I rinsed in warm water, then soaked in euclan or whatever it says on the bottle. That stuff for washing wool. Anyway soaked fifteen minutes, wrung out and set in the sun. unbelievable!

I had a great Knit night at Purl's tonight. One of my buddies made me a hat! Also, I got some help learning how to knit up this cute skull for my traveling scarf group (ok one of my four traveling scarf groups yeah I'm addicted)

Crochet Activism

I'm getting braver. Today I visited the Magnolia, brought some banana bread and gave Clare this Coming Home Poncho that I made. I was wearing the shirt too.

More Asheville Adventures

While Ravelry is down I will fight withdrawal symptoms by blogging about the latest in my life. I have applied for a part-time job in order to fund my yarn habit. Well ok it will help pay the bills but then I can buy yarn guilt-free! So wish me luck. My skills are: Quickbooks, and counseling. And yarny stuff. Anybody hiring?
Last night I went to the Knitting Guild meeting on Grove St. I really enjoy these meetings because I feel like I am reading a novel as I experience the group's interactions. All of the members are such characters! Spunky, intelligent, talented, with a variety of moods from giggly and sweet to churlish, these older knitters are a joy. I especially love to see their work, complicated and beautiful. I'll have to bring my camera next month. Plus, Marilyn H who teaches at Purl's, taught me a crochet cast on! Next meeting is the first Mon night in September, be there or be square. OK you can be both.

Squeeee! I got RAKKED!

I got not one but TWO packages today! One had two skeins of orange yarn from Queen's Collection with silk in them. Woot! This was from crafty2835. Plus Knitidiot sent me: PnC for charity, a pin, and bamboo dpn's and a bamboo hook from chiaogoo! I am rotten to the core.

Socks in Slow Mo

We have decided in the newer knitters group on Rav that admitting our terror of socks is half the battle. I finally started my first sock! I'm going in slow motion I swear to God. After the ribbing it gets easier. I'm using Silver's Socks Class.
Last night I even turned the heel after knitting guild meeting!

Hitting the Motherload

Jennifer and I drove to Brevard this morning to check out an estate sale that had yarn. I am, well, speechless with guilty pleasure. The drop spindle pictured was fifty cents. The embroidered bag, eleven balls of Debbie Bliss DK, the rest of the yarn and ALL the wooden clover needles, dpns, aluminum needles and circs, all for fifty bucks. unbelievable.

Can you tell I finally bought batteries for the camera?

Finished my sweet sweater finally. It's a great pattern for plus size gals, you just measure yourself and plug the numbers into the pattern to get your number of stitches. Also finally made my Lyra hat, I knitted the body then crocheted a border.

Creative Crochet Idea!

Saw this on Ravelry, What a cool bunch of crochet animals!

Naked Gypsies

I had a really weird day today. first I learned that I have been knitting backwards or something. I took some stuff to KIP at Jack in The Woods, a local pub, for trivia night with some friends. Talk about feeling dumb as a box of rocks. Erg. Anyway this tourist couple next to me was watching my attempts to knit and she showed me how she was taught by her Mum. Maybe I learned something. I have attached random photos that I found online, one has these adorable cupcakes. How can you go wrong with yarn and cupcakes? I want them on my birthday. Also a photo of a lion brand doggie sweater with mane included. Too too funny. Other than random knitting and pics, I must get to the real weirdness here- you know how there's always one family in every neighborhood who are just strange? We have these gypsies. The old granny fortune teller (I am not making this up) daughter fortuneteller, bunch of cute kids. They're always doing stuff in the front yard like selling big Jesus statues or washing their hair in their inflatable pool. So today we drive down the road and I look over and hey, whoa, there's uh, this fat naked woman standing in the front yard rinsing off clothes under a spigot. Just....yeah. Ok.

Dark Ages, Anyone?

Other than "vomitrocious" I am at a loss to explain my disgust with this.
